This is for my college class. I know it is a bit different. After debating different creative approaches I could take, I decided to make this a metaphor more than making it totally like every aspect of the book “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston. So although Janie in this video isn’t African American and doesn’t speak the way they do in the book, I hope you still enjoy it. This monologue takes place after Joe/Jody slaps Janie. I tried to add a element of hope and light to this one as a foreshadowing of Tea Cake. Hopefully it will all make sense. The glass vase shattering in the beginning symbolizes Janie’s image of Joe and who he truly was. Likewise the flowers symbolize all her hopes and dreams for love and marriage. Also she is dressed similar to a bride since it symbolizes her longing for love and her deep and true waiting. We soiled and made her veil and cloak muddy to show how her dream has been tarnished and dirty through her other relationships. And we gave her a bouquet of dried flowers to show how she cherishes happy and loving memories and longs for them again. Also the song in the background is “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserable” which seems to fit very well with Janie’s life. Watch parts one and two first to fully understand everything!
